Familie Sänger

There is a privately compiled family tree according to which Isaak Sänger was born in Obernbreit in 1760. His great-grandson, who wrote a family chronicle in 1927, believes that his great-grandfather Isaak moved here from an unknown place and writes: "In any case, it is certain that he was a prayer leader (Chassen) in Obernbreit, and that the name Sänger also has its origins there."

It is certain that the Sängers had numerous descendants, most of whom moved away. Anna, one of the daughters, married a Christian around 1850, "which is why this daughter was disowned by the family". Their son was the composer Anton Urspruch.

Descendants from the generation of Isaac's great-great-grandchildren settled in Marktbreit, Westphalia, Frankfurt, Lorraine, Mannheim and New York. Everywhere they married into important companies or founded some themselves.

Two bachelors from this generation were still living in Obernbreit in 1928.

They ran a thriving textile store in the village, but were also involved in the peddling trade in the surrounding area. Contemporary witnesses reported that they granted generous credit and that even after 1933 people were still secretly buying from them.

But they also had other experiences: There were Obernbreiter who boycotted the brothers' store, smeared the store with anti-Jewish slogans and excluded the brothers from local clubs and denied them access to pubs.

In September 1942, they were deported to Theresienstadt and murdered there.
